Sam Womack, a volunteer at community interest company, Spring into Action, gained a Highly Commended Award at the prestigious BIBAS Awards last month, at a glittering awards ceremony at Blackpool’s Tower Ballroom.

Sam was nominated for the Award by director and youth worker, Rachael McHugh. She said: “We are delighted that Sam came runner up and received this Highly Commended Award. During his time with Spring into Action, Sam has gained in confidence and has overcome barriers which often prevent him from fully participating in new things.”

Sam volunteers on the Spring into Phab project, which was funded by the BIBAS and Lancashire County Council, to inspire enterprise amongst young people. The project, which began as a volunteer training programme 12 months ago, worked with a group of young people to help them set up their own enterprise. The group chose to set up a multi activity club for children and young people with learning disabilities and voted Sam as the Club representative and Vice Chair Person.

During this project Sam has challenged himself to speak in public, delivering a presentation at a Parents Evening and doing a speech at the opening launch event on 14th May 2016, to address the Mayor of Ribble Valley. Sam takes his roles very seriously and is fully committed to fulfilling his duties to make the new enterprise a success.

Sam is thrilled to win the award and hopes it helps to raise awareness of the Spring into Phab group. He said: “I feel really pleased with myself and it was like really wonderful attending the ceremony with my dad.”

Sam and the other young volunteers officially launched the Spring into Phab enterprise in November 2015 and began delivering activities in May 2016. As well as volunteering on the Saturday morning sessions, Sam is a designated bank signatory for the enterprise and attends regular committee meetings and support meetings with youth workers from Spring into Action. The group re currently recruiting support staff to support them at sessions they plan to launch later this year.

Lucy Hamlin, director, added: “We are all delighted that Sam has achieved this award. We will be celebrating this and more achievements at Spring into Phab’s AGM next month.”
